Bassmaster 6

Concept:
What we have here is a six string, short scale bass. If anyone remembers Fender's Bass VI, this instrument is somewhat inspired by that.

Although often referred to as a baritone guitar, the Bass VI was more accurately a short scale bass with six strings. The scale length was 30 inches (similar to Gibson's EB0 bass).

This bass (another for Mr. Cheevers of The Burning Effigies - see the Interceptor page), is therefore a six (or VI) string bass. It will have a one piece alder body and a bolt-on maple neck with a 30" scale length. Its six strings will anchor in a Jazzmaster-style trem before passing over a tune-o-matic style bridge equipped with roller saddles. This should give better tuning stability and will help tone and sustain. From the bridge, the strings travel up a 21 fret, ebony fingerboard to traditional tuners.

There will be three Jaguar-style pickups mounted on a b-w-b plastic pickguard. Around the pickguard will be a number of chrome control plates for controls and switches.

All hardware will be chromed and the guitar will be finished in black lacquer. The front of the headstock too will be finished in black, although the rear of the neck will be traditional (if aged) clear lacquer. All that black combined with a nice, dark ebony fingerboard (with no front position markers), should make for a pretty striking instrument.

Overview:
• Six string, short scale bass.
• One piece alder body
• 21 fret, ebony fingerboard on bolt-on maple neck.
• Three Jaguar-style pickups.
• Jazzmaster style trem with tune-o-matic roller bridge.
• Chrome hardware.
• Individual on/off switches for each pickup
• Black Lacquer finish

Update 1:
Starting with the neck this time. What we have is a bolt-on style maple neck. This has been cut to shape and has had its truss rod channel (access at the body end) routed. As an addition on this neck, I have installed two carbon fibre reinforcing rods (they're the dark strips in the maple). I've done this because the owner wants a relatively slim neck and those six strings are going to create quite a strain.

The ebony fingerboard has been slotted as appropriate for a 30" scale and is now ready to be glued to the neck and shaped.

Right... The fingerboard has been glued to the neck and has been radiused to 12" to match the radius on the tune-o-matic bridge that we're using. All 21 frets have been fitted, levelled and dressed.

The neck profile has been shaped to the owner's specification and the side position markers fitted. All that remains is final sanding and it will be ready for finishing.

Update 2:
Moving to the body now. What we have is a one piece alder body (actually relatively lucky to get a one piece alder blank in this size to be honest). The initial shaping and routing has taken place.

Obvious in the image are the pickup cavities (three of them), the neck pocket and the cavity for the spring and workings of the trem. The other three cavities are control cavities. Volume, tone and jack at the rear and two other switch/control cavities. These will all have nice shiny chromed plates covering them when complete.
